Available on my website: https://robertopazziphoto.com The Himba people are an indigenous community who mainly inhabit the remote northwestern regions of Namibia. Traditionally semi-nomadic pastoralists, they depend largely on cattle and goat herding, activities that shape not only their economy, but also their social structure and cultural identity. Livestock serves as far more than sustenance; it represents wealth, prestige, and continuity within the community. The Himba are widely recognized for their striking and distinctive appearance. Women apply a traditional cosmetic mixture known as otjize, a blend of red ochre powder, butterfat, and aromatic herbs. This reddish paste protects the skin from the harsh climate while also serving aesthetic and symbolic purposes. Hairstyles hold profound cultural meaning, particularly for women. Intricate braids and adornments signify age, marital status, and stage of life. Young girls typically wear two forward-facing braids called ozondato, whereas married women and mothers adopt more elaborate styles, often embellished with shells, beads, and animal hair. Men’s hairstyles also reflect social standing and age; for instance, young unmarried men traditionally wear a single braid known as ondatu. Clothing, though minimal, carries deep symbolic value. Women generally wear calfskin skirts and adorn themselves with handcrafted jewelry fashioned from iron, copper, shells, and ostrich eggshells. Traditional Himba dwellings are dome-shaped huts constructed from interwoven sticks, mud, and cow dung. These homes are arranged in circular family compounds, typically centered around a sacred fire. This fire embodies the spiritual bond between the living and their ancestors and is carefully maintained as a focal point of religious and cultural life. Despite increasing contact with modern society, the Himba have succeeded in preserving much of their ancestral way of life, along with their language, Otjiherero, and their enduring customs. Straordinaria realizzazione e bel documento. Donne dalla grande forza ed un popolo che apprezzo e stimo tantissimo. Purtroppo, come spesso accade, si sfrutta solo al fine di fare danaro sulla pelle degli altri.
