Available on my website: https://robertopazziphoto.com The Toposa are a Nilotic ethnic group residing primarily in the Greater Kapoeta region of Eastern Equatoria in South Sudan, with some communities also found in neighbouring Ethiopia, Uganda and Kenya. They speak the Toposa language, which is part of the Turkana group of Nilotic languages and is closely related to the languages of neighbouring pastoral groups. The terrain they inhabit is semi-arid and rugged, with hills, ridges and shallow plains cut by seasonal streams, and rainfall there is low and unpredictable. Traditionally the Toposa are agro-pastoralists, herding cattle, sheep and goats and cultivating sorghum and other crops in river valleys, and they obtain milk, blood, meat and leather from their animals. In the wet season livestock graze near villages and in the dry season the men take the herds to distant pastures before returning at the next rains. Boys are taught to care for goats and sheep before graduating to cattle when they come of age. Women remain in the villages farming, cooking, raising children and caring for the elderly. Cattle hold significant cultural importance, often serving as a measure of wealth, social status and a means to pay bride price, and almost every social activity and ritual is connected to them. Possession of cattle, and often a loaded gun, are seen as key indicators of status and wealth in Toposa society. The Toposa also pan for gold and other minerals in stream beds. They have a long history of low-level conflict and cattle raiding with neighbouring groups, driven by competition for water and pasturage. Their social organisation is traditionally patriarchal and decisions affecting the community are made in male gatherings under elders and chiefs, though this is changing as aspects of modern life spread. Traditional beliefs include worship of a supreme being and ancestral spirits, with rituals and sacrifices to seek assistance during droughts or disease, and many customs are transmitted orally through songs, dance, music, poems and folklore.
