ngc6960, the "Witch's Broom" nebula in Cygnus Loop inviata il 06 Marzo 2025 ore 19:49 da Paschalis. 2 commenti, 96 visite. NGC6960, known as the Western Veil Nebula, or Witch's Broom Nebula, or also Sharpless 103, is the remnant from a supernova which occurred 10,000 years ago.
It's the counterpart to NGC 6992, the Eastern Veil Nebula,
Its filamentary structure is thought to be due to compression of expanding shells of gas as they meet the interstellar medium. However, the shells are so thin that, with few exceptions, we see them only where viewed exactly edge-on.
The fact that much of what we see as empty space is filled with dark dust is evidenced by the fact that more background stars are visible below the nebula than above it.
This is because the shock wave has swept the area below the nebula clear of the dust, allowing more background stars to shine through. The bright star at the center, named 52 Cygni, is a type K star and lies actually at the foreground, not associated physically with the nebula.
NGC6960 is indeed a quite demanding celestial target to image.
Capturing the frames requires perfect polar alignment and impeccable balancing of the whole astrophotographic set-up, as the imaging area stays high in the sky.
