Available on my website: https://robertopazziphoto.com The Larim are a small Surmic speaking ethnic group living in Eastern Equatoria, mainly in the Boya Hills of Budi County. Their settlements lie among rolling hills, savannah and seasonal rivers in a region that includes the area around Kimatong. The Larim population is relatively small and is distributed across several villages. Their livelihood is agro pastoral. The Larim cultivate crops such as sorghum, maize and beans while also raising cattle, goats and sheep. Livestock is central to their economy and social life. Cattle are particularly valued as a measure of wealth and prestige and play an important role in social transactions such as bridewealth. Larim society is organised around lineages and extended kin networks that reinforce strong community ties. Oral traditions and shared rituals transmit knowledge about the group’s origins, migrations and social values. Their villages consist mainly of round huts with thatched roofs arranged in small clusters. Visual culture is highly significant and includes body scarification, beadwork and distinctive hairstyles. Body modifications such as scarification and piercings are practiced by both men and women and carry social and aesthetic meanings connected to identity, maturity and status. Elders guide the community through advice, mediation and ritual leadership, preserving oral history and ensuring continuity between everyday life and the traditions of the Larim people.
