NGC 2264 è un brillante ammasso aperto a circa 2500 anni luce di distanza, circondato da un grande sistema di nebulosità diffuse, all'interno della costellazione dell'Unicorno. Nel vertice meridionale dell'ammasso, se si osserva con un telescopio dotato di apposito filtro, diventa evidente una nebulosa, nel cui bordo è presente una toppa scura a forma di cono con la punta rivolta verso l'alto. Questa struttura ha reso famosa la nube con il nome proprio di Nebulosa Cono. A nord-ovest dell'ammasso si estende inoltre una vasta nebulosità più debole, ben visibile nelle foto a lunga esposizione.
