Detto in parole semplici... la tecnica del focus stacking permette di ottenere una immagine finale con una maggiore profondità di campo.
Occorre fare diversi scatti, ognuno dei quali con un punto di messa a fuoco diverso. Alla fine un software elabora le immagini e crea un'immagine finale fatta con le parti più a fuoco dei singoli scatti.
La cosa più difficile e che richiede pazienza è che fotocamera e soggetto devono essere immobili, perché quello che deve cambiare nei singoli scatti è solo il punto di messa a fuoco.
In questo caso io ho fatto 168 scatti, con l'uso di una microslitta manuale e telecomando, ma se vuoi provare puoi fare una cosa molto semplice. Ad esempio, in casa davanti ad un tavolo metti la fotocamera su un treppiede e sul tavolo metti 3 oggetti a distanza diversa. Scatti 3 foto, ognuna delle quali mettendo a fuoco un oggetto. Poi scarichi da internet un programma gratuito per focus stacking oppure la versione di prova di Helicon Focus (io uso la versione a pagamento di questo software) e "unisci" i 3 scatti. Vedrai che il risultato sarà un'immagine con tutti e 3 i soggetti a fuoco.

Hai ragione Marcello, i singoli scatti avranno un ingrandimento leggermente diverso, ma in questo caso il software ridimensiona le immagini in automatico quanto basta per renderle uniformi e nel caso taglia qualche pixel ai bordi. I problemi nascono quando purtroppo si sposta qualcosa all'interno della scena.
