Si tratta di un caccia americano il change Vought F4U - 5 con base su portaerei, fu ripescato da un peschereccio nelle acque al largo di Portopalo su un fondale di sabbia e fango a cica 70 metri di profondità e portato sulla banchina del porto. Questo caccia, protagonista nella guerra del pacifico ha scritto la storia contro i caccia zero nipponici inferiori tecnicamente. Dalle targhetta di questo esemplare si evince che è stato consegnato alle forze aeree degli Stati Uniti il 17/09/1947 e quindi non ha partecipato agli eventi bellici della seconda guerra mondiale, misteriosi i motivi del suo inabissamento.
