Valle d'Aosta - Marzo 2020 - Le grandi nevicate di inizio mese hanno modificato le abitudini degli ungulati, e con esse anche quelle dei lupi che, per cacciare, devono scendere verso il fondovalle esponendosi ai pericoli umani. Risalgo una valanga sulla quale mi hanno segnalato la presenza di un giovane cervo predato. L'intenzione è quella di appostarmi per fotografare eventuali aquile o gipeti intenti a cibarsi della carcassa. Mai mi sarei immaginato ciò che sarebbe successo di lì a poco. Mi apposto ad un centinaio di metri; l'attesa non dura troppo, ho giusto il tempo di sistemare la macchina sul treppiede, quando dall'alto delle rocce vedo una sagoma grigia; prendo il binocolo per accertarmi di ciò che mi era parso di vedere, "cavolo, c'è davvero un lupo lassù!!" Fortunatamente è intento a controllare la sua preda, senza accorgersi di me. Scatto le prime foto, con il 500 liscio sono un po' corto così, il più lentamente possibile, riesco a prendere il moltiplicatore dallo zaino e a montarlo. Passano i minuti, con qualche incertezza il lupo inizia a scendere lungo il canale, il freddo e l'emozione del momento mi fanno letteralmente tremare. Ho le dita congelate, sono sdraiato nella neve da diverso tempo, quasi non riesco scattare. Dal mirino della reflex vedo che si dirige verso la sua preda; mentre si ciba rimane sempre attento a ciò che lo circonda, probabilmente sente anche il rumore di scatto della mia macchina perché diverse volte alza lo sguardo verso di me. Dopo un'ora sono praticamente paralizzato dal freddo. Solo quando termina il suo pasto e ricomincia a salire il canale capisco che si tratta di una lupa. Attendo che la luce cali un po' prima di ritirarmi. Il mio sogno si è avverato e se ci penso ancora non me ne rendo conto, credo che non scorderò mai il suo sguardo, i suoi occhi "piantati " nei miei.
