L'imponente sagoma del castello normanno svevo è il simbolo di Melfi e la sua storia è legata alle figure di spicco che si sono succedute nel corso dei secoli nella città posta alle pendici del Monte Vulture. Voluto da Roberto il Guiscardo, ampliato da Federico II, dotato di nuove torri da Carlo I d'Angiò, rimaneggiato dai Caracciolo e dai Doria, a vederlo, il castello di Melfi sembra quasi emergere sulla sommità di un colle e non si può non condividere l'opinione di quanti lo considerano il castello più noto della Basilicata e uno dei più grandi del sud Italia. Subito si impongono allo sguardo le dieci torri, sette rettangolari e tre pentagonali, dei quattro ingressi, tre sono angioini, e attraverso uno di essi, aperto di Doria, si accede al borgo attraverso un ponte, un tempo levatoio. Superato il portone, si entra nel bel cortile principale, su cui affacciano il palazzo baronale e la cappella gentilizia. Al piano terra del castello è ospitato il Museo Archeologico Nazionale del Melfese. All rights reserved.
