L'Abbazia di S. Michele sorge in un paesaggio di straordinaria bellezza, dove il verde di una fitta vegetazione si alterna a due specchi d'acqua creando un incantevole effetto scenografico. L'abbazia, fondata dai Benedettini nel X sec., ha una tradizione molto antica. Fu infatti costruita su una grotta scavata nel tufo, nei pressi della quale sono stati ritrovati depositi votivi risalenti al IV-III sec. a.C. La Grotta dell'Angelo dedicata a S. Michele era il luogo dove si riunivano in preghiera i monaci italo-greci che anticamente abitavano la zona. Successivamente vi si insediarono i Benedettini, che fecero edificare l'abbazia, abbandonandola poi nel 1456. Dopo molte vicissitudini passò ai Cappuccini, che fondarono una biblioteca e un lanificio. L'intero complesso è costituito da un convento a più piani, una chiesa settecentesca e la cappella di S. Michele. Un caratteristico sentiero attraversa i fitti boschi e conduce all'abbazia che, arroccata su una falda del monte Vulture, si affaccia sul lago Piccolo creando un gradevole contrasto con la natura circostante.
