A detta di molti, è la più piccola isola abitata al mondo. Molto affascinanti sono le due leggende che riguardano la sua nascita e la sua particolare forma che ricalca quella di una nave. Si racconta che l'isola Tiberina sia sorta dal cumulo di covoni di grano appartenuti ai Tarquini e gettati nel fiume dai Romani quando l'ultimo re di Roma, Tarquinio il Superbo, fu cacciato dalla città. Anche la curiosa sagoma a forma di nave si può spiegare con una leggenda. Si racconta che proprio una nave, nel 291 a.C., sia salpata verso la città di Epidauro per chiedere soccorso al potente dio della medicina, Esculapio, per debellare una grave epidemia che aveva colpito Roma. Mentre si svolgevano i riti propiziatori nel santuario, un serpente uscì dal tempio per rifugiarsi proprio sulla nave romana. Certi che lo stesso Esculapio si fosse trasformato in quell'animale, la nave si affrettò a ritornare a Roma e quando giunse presso l'Isola Tiberina, il serpente scese nel fiume e nuotò fino a raggiungerla, indicando così il punto esatto in cui sarebbe dovuto sorgere il grande tempio a lui dedicato e che di fatto, avrebbe garantito la fine dell'epidemia. Fu quindi in ricordo di questo evento miracoloso che l'isola prese la forma di una nave romana, con tanto di prua, poppa e persino di albero maestro, rappresentato, in origine, da un obelisco, andato poi perduto e sostituito in seguito dalla cosiddetta “colonna infame”, sulla quale veniva affissa una tabella in cui erano indicati i “banditi che nel giorno di Pasqua non partecipavano alla messa eucaristica”. Ma anche questa colonna fece una brutta fine: nella metà dell'800 la colonna si spezzò per l'urto violento di un carro (per sbaglio o volutamente non è dato saperlo) e fu sostituita per volere di papa Pio IX dal monumento attuale, opera di Ignazio Jacometti, con le statue dei Santi Bartolomeo, Francesco di Assisi, Paolino da Nola e Giovanni di Dio. Alle spalle del monumento, si trova l'antica chiesa di San Bartolomeo, edificata proprio al di sopra dell'antico tempio romano del dio Esculapio, con a lato un antico monastero francescano, usato come sinagoga durante il periodo di occupazione tedesca ed oggi è sede dell'Ospedale Israelitico. Nel 1500 apre sull'isola Tiberinba, il grande ospedale, dei più importanti in città – gestito dalla Congregazione di San Giovanni di Dio, il famoso “Fatebenefratelli”. L'ospedale assunse questo curioso nome dal suo stesso fondatore, San Giovanni di Dio, un frate portoghese che per le vie di Granada, vestito con il solo saio, davanti all'ospedale da lui stesso organizzato, era solito rivolgere ai passanti un insolito richiamo: “Fate bene, fratelli”! E' ben collegata e ancorata alla terraferma, fin dall'epoca romana grazie alla presenza dei suoi due ponti. Il primo, è il Ponte Fabricio che conduce verso il Ghetto e verso Trastevere invece, vi è Ponte Cestio costruito nel 46 a.C. da Lucio Cestio, importante uomo politico dell'epoca di Giulio Cesare. E' poi qui presente il ristorante della grande attrice Elena Fabrizi, in arte Sora Lella, vero e proprio orgoglio romano, all'interno del quale sarà possibile saziarsi con gli ottimi piatti della cucina tipica romana!
