Il castello di Sirmione è una rocca di epoca scaligera, punto d'accesso al centro storico di Sirmione. Si tratta di uno fra i più completi e meglio conservati castelli d'Italia, oltre che raro esempio di fortificazione lacustre. E' bagnato su tutti i lati dalle acque del lago di Garda, e su uno di questi lati è stata realizzata, poco dopo la costruzione del castello, la darsena, che un tempo rappresentava il luogo di rifugio della flotta scaligera. Le mura e le tre massicce torri maggiori sono caratterizzate dalle merlature a coda di rondine che contraddistinguono ogni costruzione scaligera: dietro questi tre torrioni emerge l'imponente mastio, alto 47 metri, sotto al quale si trovavano le celle destinate ai prigionieri. Durante il XIII secolo, Sirmione, già organizzata in libero Comune, entrò a far parte dei domini dei Della Scala di Verona ai quali si deve la costruzione della imponente rocca che proteggeva il borgo e il porto. Non si conosce con esattezza la data di costruzione del castello che, per la sua posizione strategica. era destinato militarmente in difesa dei domini Scaligeri verso Mantova e Milano. La prima parte del Castello, costruito sui resti di una fortificazione romana, il Mastio, il cortile principale, le tre torri angolari e i due ingressi con ponte levatoio, venne costruito verso la fine del XIII secolo (1277–1278) ad opera di Mastino I della Scala. Il secolo dopo venne costruita la Darsena e la recinzione del borgo, di cui rimangono una torre angolare nelle vicinanze della chiesa di S. Maria Maggiore e la porta merlata che si affaccia su piazza Flaminia. Nel 1405 Sirmione passò sotto il dominio della Repubblica di Venezia mantenendo la funzione di controllo e di difesa del basso Garda. Nel XVI secolo cominciò un lento ma inesorabile declino della rocca in concomitanza dell'aumentata importanza assunto dalla vicina cittadella di Peschiera. Il Castello rimase sede della guarnigione militare, fino alla caduta di Venezia nel 1797. poi caserma dei francesi e degli austriaci, sino all'Unità d'Italia.
