È la cattedrale della città, elevata al titolo di 'Metropolitana' nel 1582 da Papa Gregorio XIII che conferì alla diocesi di Bologna la dignità arcivescovile. Le origini dell'edificio, anticamente dotato di un battistero davanti alla facciata, affondano negli albori dell'era cristiana anche se le prime testimonianze risalgono al secolo X. Sono stati vari i cambiamenti apportati alla cattedrale nel corso dei secoli, prima devastata da un incendio nell'agosto del 1131, poi rimessa a dura prova da un terremoto nel 1222. La veste attuale le è stata conferita a partire dal 1605 quando tre architetti (Floriano Ambrosini, Alfonso Torreggiani e Cosimo Morelli) la ristrutturano causando però la perdita di ogni traccia del primitivo impianto romano-gotico. La posa della prima pietra avvenne il 26 marzo 1605. Per iniziativa del papa bolognese Benedetto XIV, tra il 1743 e il 1754 la cattedrale venne impreziosita con una nuova facciata su disegno di Alfonso Torreggiani. All'interno la chiesa è arricchita dai dipinti di Prospero Fontana (1579), Ludovico Carracci (Annunciazione nel lunettone dell'altare maggiore, 1618), Marcantonio Franceschini (1728) e Donato Creti (1740) e da due gruppi plastici di particolare interesse: un Crocifisso fra la Madonna e S. Giovanni Evangelista in legno del sec. XII, già nella cattedrale romanica, e un Compianto sul Cristo morto, di Alfonso Lombardi (1522-1527). Il tesoro della Cattedrale ospita manufatti e paramenti liturgici dal secolo XIV di grandissimo valore artistico e spirituale. Il campanile è la seconda torre per altezza della città (m. 70). In realtà si tratta di due torri edificate in tempi diversi (sec. X e XIII) una dentro l'altra. La cella campanaria ospita la campana più grossa suonabile “alla bolognese” (in modo cadenzato e con rotazione completa della campana) e pesa 33 quintali. Il concerto campanario pesa complessivamente 65 quintali. Dalla torre si gode una suggestiva panoramica sul centro cittadino e sui colli. PRECISAZIONE NECESSARIA Sabato pomeriggio ero in giro per la città, in via Indipendenza ho visto questa chiesa e pur, non avendo la blasonata 6Mark II e l'obiettivo adatto, non resistito alla voglia di riprendere questo splendore di Barocco.
