Il Frosone è il più grande e il più robusto tra i Fringillidi: nonostante la coda piuttosto corta può raggiungere, infatti, i 17 centimetri di lunghezza, per 60 grammi di peso. Le differenze tra i sessi non sono molto evidenti, anche se i colori della femmina appaiono, in generale, più sbiaditi. La tonalità prevalente della livrea è il marrone, con cappuccio color nocciola e fascia grigia intorno al collo. Mostra pizzo e mustacchi neri, ali anch'esse nere con fascia bianca, ventre bianco. Tipico è il grosso becco, di colore blu metallico in periodo riproduttivo e giallastro durante la stagione fredda. È distribuito in quasi tutti i continenti, dalle Isole Britanniche fino al Giappone. Nel Paleartico occidentale l'areale riproduttivo è ampio ma frammentato, in quanto legato a una buona disponibilità di latifoglie produttrici di semi “duri”, alla base della sua dieta. Tre le sottospecie note, delle quali la sottospecie nominale C. c. coccothraustes abita il vecchio continente, Italia compresa. In Italia nidifica in prevalenza nelle zone montuose, con netta prevalenza di Alpi e Appennino centrale, mentre è del tutto assente dalle estreme regioni meridionali e dalla Sicilia. Una popolazione isolata abita invece la Sardegna. Come tutti i granivori, il Frosone si nutre di semi ma, rispetto ad altri Fringillidi, predilige le gemme fresche e la frutta, come le ciliegie, di cui spolpa anche il nocciolo. Il nido, a forma di coppa, viene costruito quasi esclusivamente dalla femmina sugli alberi utilizzando ramoscelli, piccole radici, licheni. Le uova deposte sono in media 5, per una sola covata l'anno. Il maschio partecipa saltuariamente alla cova, che si protrae per 12-14 giorni. I pulcini sono nutriti da entrambi i genitori e lasciano il nido all'età di 10-14 giorni.?Il suo principale tratto distintivo è il becco, tozzo e potente, che può sviluppare una forza pari a 45 kg e, nella stagione degli amori, assume una sgargiante tonalità blu elettrico. Grazie alla sua potenza, permette alla specie di cibarsi di semi di frutti carnosi, anche dei noccioli durissimi di ciliegie e pesche che riesce tranquillamente a frantumare. Per il resto, il Frosone è un uccello schivo e silenzioso e trascorre molto tempo sulle cime degli alberi nascosto tra il fogliame, dove sosta spesso in piccoli gruppi. Quando però si muove sul terreno è riconoscibile anche per un altro tratto distintivo: la tipica camminata eretta e saltellante…?
