Il 30 dicembre ai Mercatini di Natale faceva un freddo polare, e Jorg, dietro il suo baracchino di legno, fatto di maschere, strumenti musicali del passato e una vera e propria collezione di cappelli, intratteneva il suo pubblico con le sue storie. Un moderno cantastorie, in abiti ottocenteschi. Raccontava a un folto pubblico di adulti e bambini, vecchie leggende sassoni. Ma chi erano i cantastorie? Divenuti ben presto figure assai popolari, si potevano incontrare negli incroci delle strade di grande traffico, all'ingresso delle chiese, nelle piazze e nei castelli, soprattutto nei giorni in cui si celebravano ricorrenze religiose o feste nuziali. Originariamente i giullari eseguivano le opere letterarie dei trovatori ? cioè dei poeti provenzali del 12° e 13° secolo, molti dei quali avevano iniziato la loro carriera proprio come artisti girovaghi ? ma ben presto divennero autori di componimenti propri. Alcuni di essi abbandonarono la vita vagabonda e si sistemarono presso le corti dei signori o al seguito di un protettore di alto rango, per approdare nella categoria dei menestrelli. Tuttavia i giullari o cantastorie, come vennero chiamati dopo il Medioevo, non scomparirono affatto, ma restarono per secoli una presenza familiare nelle strade e nelle piazze di città e villaggi, cantando canzoni originali, rielaborando e diffondendo leggende, esaltando luoghi santi e personaggi eroici Anima delle feste popolari, onnipresente ai battesimi e alle nozze, nei balli di carnevale e nelle solennità religiose, il cantastorie poteva contare su un pubblico di appassionati spettatori. Spesso i cantastorie vendevano foglietti su cui erano stampate le 'cantiche' ? ossia le storie in versi che essi recitavano o cantavano con l'accompagnamento di uno strumento musicale ?, talvolta illustrate con cartelloni in cui venivano raffigurate le scene salienti. In molti casi le storie venivano rielaborate e adattate nel dialetto locale, inserendovi anche accenni o riferimenti a personaggi e vicende familiari al pubblico del posto. Uno dei filoni più importante del repertorio dei cantastorie era costituito dalle chansons de geste ("canzoni di gesta"), i poemi epici francesi medievali: grazie ai cantastorie, leggendari eroi come Carlomagno, Orlando, Rinaldo e Angelica divennero personaggi popolari. I cantastorie ebbero quindi un importante ruolo di mediatori culturali, rendendo accessibile il mondo della letteratura colta alla massa della popolazione, perlopiù analfabeta. In un certo senso, anzi, essi restituivano la grande epica alla tradizione orale da cui era nata. Ma anche vite dei santi e leggende sacre, storie d'amore tragiche e sentimentali e imprese di famosi banditi venivano messe in versi e declamate. Spesso la narrazione era interrotta ad arte nei punti salienti della vicenda, dando luogo a una specie di 'storia a puntate' che anticipava i meccanismi delle telenovelas di oggi. Col passare dei secoli, però, i cantastorie andarono perdendo la loro popolarità, anche per l'incapacità di rinnovare il repertorio tradizionale adeguandolo ai tempi. Non più in grado di sostenere la concorrenza delle varie forme specializzate di intrattenimento (danza, teatro, musica) e in seguito del cinema, della radio e della televisione, la figura del cantastorie divenne sempre più rara fino a scomparire del tutto.
