Scilla e Cariddi erano due mostri marini che vivevano nello stretto di Messina. La leggenda narra che Scilla era una splendida ninfa, figlia di Forco e Crataide. Trascorreva i suoi giorni nel mare, giocando con le altre ninfe e rifiutava tutti i pretendenti. Quando il dio del mare Glauco si innamor? di lei, and? dalla maga Circe a chiedere un filtro d'amore, ma Circe a sua volta si invagh? di lui. Descritto come un mostro figlio di Poseidone e di Gea, succhiava l'acqua del mare e la risputava tre volte al giorno con tale violenza da far naufragare le navi di passaggio. Odisseo, dovendo passare necessariamente tra i due mostri, prefer? avvicinarsi a Scilla poich? Cariddi avrebbe portato sicuramente la distruzione delle navi. Pi? tardi, dopo che i suoi uomini erano stati uccisi da Zeus per aver catturato gli armamenti di Elio, la nave di Odisseo venne attratta dal gorgo di Cariddi, e l'eroe sopravvisse soltanto perch? riusc? ad aggrapparsi ad un fico che sbucava dall'acqua.
