Scilla e Cariddi erano due mostri marini che vivevano nello stretto di Messina. La leggenda narra che Scilla era una splendida ninfa, figlia di Forco e Crataide. Trascorreva i suoi giorni nel mare, giocando con le altre ninfe e rifiutava tutti i pretendenti. Quando il dio del mare Glauco si innamor? di lei, and? dalla maga Circe a chiedere un filtro d'amore, ma Circe a sua volta si invagh? di lui.
