Intanto sporcano e imbrattano senza alcun rispetto per questo luogo unico al mondo. Venezia si difende e li spolpa, con irriverenza e spesso con strafottenza.
Poi arriva la notte, quella profonda. Venezia si libera delle formiche che le pizzicano le caviglie e ritorna ad essere sé stessa, con la sua poesia, i suoi rumori di passi in una calle, lo sciabordio del remo nel canale. Questa è la Venezia che amo, che ti abbraccia e ti coccola con i suoi colori, con i suoi odori di salsedine e alghe morenti per la bassa marea, con le sue luci fioche e con la palpabile ricchezza della sua storia e della sua vita intellettuale.
Ecco perché Venezia mi piace di notte ed ecco perché credo che anche quest'anno, come l'anno scorso e quello prima, andrò a Venezia, in Agosto, per vagabondare senza meta fino all'alba, fuggendo un attimo prima che finisca la poesia.
