Available on my website: https://robertopazziphoto.com The San people, commonly known as Bushmen, are the members of the indigenous hunter-gatherer cultures of southern Africa. They are believed to be the earliest inhabitants of the region since their existence can be traced back 140,000 years here. The San developed a rich culture of hunting rituals, spiritual ceremonies, complex rock paintings and trance-like healing dances. Their way of life was traditionally based on an intimate knowledge of the land, including seasonal animal movements, edible plants, and scarce water sources, which allowed them to survive in some of the harshest environments on the continent. Socially, San communities were typically small, mobile, and strongly egalitarian, with decisions made through consensus and resources shared to ensure group survival. Oral storytelling played a central role in passing down history, moral values, and practical knowledge from one generation to the next. Over the past centuries, the San were persecuted and forced from their ancestral lands. The expansion of farming populations and European settlers led to the loss of their hunting territories, as their nomadic lifestyle conflicted with imposed land systems. In modern times, policies in countries such as Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa further limited access to traditional lands, weakening their cultural and spiritual ties to the territory. Despite centuries of displacement, marginalization, and cultural disruption caused by colonial expansion and modern state formation, many San communities continue to preserve elements of their language, belief systems, and traditional practices, maintaining a deep spiritual connection to nature that remains at the core of their identity.
