The sport has deep historical roots and reflects the nomadic heritage, horsemanship, and warrior traditions of the region. In Uzbekistan, Kupkari has a particularly strong cultural importance and is often played during festivals, weddings, and national celebrations, especially during spring events such as Navruz. The Uzbek version of the game is known for its intensity, the large number of participants, and the emphasis on individual skill and bravery. Matches can include dozens or even hundreds of riders competing at the same time in an open field, creating a dynamic and often chaotic scene. The goal in Uzbek Kupkari is for a rider to pick up the carcass, traditionally a headless goat or calf, from the ground and carry it to a scoring area such as a circle or a marked point. Unlike many modern sports, there are usually no fixed teams, and riders compete individually. However, temporary cooperation between riders can occur when it is useful. Winning requires strength, courage, excellent riding skills, and the ability to make quick decisions under pressure. The horses used in Kupkari are carefully trained and highly valued. They must be powerful, fast, and agile, capable of moving through dense groups of riders while staying balanced and responsive. Riders typically wear strong and practical clothing to reduce the risk of injury, since falls and collisions are common during the game. In recent years, Uzbekistan has taken steps to preserve Kupkari while also making it safer and more organized. Official competitions with clearer rules have been introduced, helping to promote the sport both nationally and internationally.
