Available on my website: https://robertopazziphoto.com The Kara is a small tribe living along the east banks of the Omo River in southern Ethiopia. Numbering only a few thousand individuals, the Kara are primarily semi-nomadic agro pastoralists whose daily life is closely tied to the seasonal rhythms of the river. They cultivate crops such as sorghum and maize on the fertile floodplains and supplement their diet with fishing and limited livestock breeding. Like many of the tribes in the Omo Valley, they paint their bodies and faces with white chalk to prepare for a ceremony, as a method of self-expression, to present the social hierarchical class in the tribe, to ward off illness or to attract the opposite gender. Body painting also plays an important role during rites of passage, such as the transition from youth to adulthood, and during communal celebrations linked to agriculture or marriage. Each design can carry personal meaning and is often created spontaneously, making the human body a living canvas that reflects mood, status and creativity. They use natural material obtained from local environment. The chalk is mixed with yellow rock, red iron ore and charcoal to make its color. In addition to these pigments, the Kara sometimes incorporate plant juices, ash and animal fat to help the paint adhere to the skin and last longer under the intense sun. Beyond body decoration, natural materials are also central to their material culture, from tools and weapons to ornaments made of beads, shells and metal. Despite increasing contact with the outside world, the Kara have maintained many of their traditional practices, which continue to express a deep connection to their land, their community and their ancestral knowledge.
