La notte de li Faegn' ad Atri (TE)

Nell'antichità i fuochi erano considerati feste di rinnovamento, di buon auspicio e di purificazione per il nuovo ciclo del tempo e l'Abruzzo conserva, nelle sue tradizioni, molte feste di fuochi e ogni anno, all'alba dell'8 dicembre, ad Atri, località in provincia di Teramo, si ripete l'antichissima tradizione popolare dei faugni (dal latino "fauni ignis", cioè fuoco di Fauno). Quindi riprendendo simbologie solari delle feste latine, i faugni nascono dalla fusione di una consuetudine pagana e contadina: infatti, un tempo, nelle campagne attorno ad Atri, i contadini accendevano dei fuochi, a fini propiziatori prima del solstizio d'inverno, in onore di Fauno, divinità pagana associata alla fertilità della terra, protettrice di pastori, greggi e agricoltura.
