fujifilm_16-80_f4wrFujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR

Pros: Sharp, relatively small for a 24-120 equivalent, build quality, tropicalized, stabilized, close focus

Cons: Position A very soft that makes you swear in ancient Aramaic, filter 72, heavy

Opinion: I was very dubious about taking it with the XT5 because I read very badly online about its resolution on 40Mpx. Well, maybe we have different yardsticks but it seems very clear to me. For the rest it seems well built and therefore the weight is felt a little after a few hours in the hand. The only real big flaw I found is the "A" position on the aperture ring: it's as soft as any other click, so just take the camera in your hand and without realizing it you're at f22 and a billion ISO. I wonder what the engineers were thinking when they designed it. I've had it for a week and it has already happened to me 3 times.

fujifilm_xt5Fujifilm X-T5

Pros: Beautiful, file quality, (lots of buttons) and controls, fun to use in general, lots of possibilities, stabilization

Cons: Menus not very understandable (then we speak badly of Sony...), (too many) buttons and controls, items in the menus disabled without explanation, video/photo switches, no metering for highlights, AF not at Sony level

Opinion: I've had this machine for 10 days so I can't say too much and will probably update the review over time. For now I feel very good and, although I hated Fuji for a long time, I had to change my mind (as I did with Ricoh): it takes a couple of days to understand it but then it's all downhill, already from the third day I felt in total control. Manual controls are clearly the strong point on Fujis. I am not interested in film simulations. Fortunately the xt5 does not have that ridiculous dial for simulations like the xe5 but unfortunately it has the photo/video switch that I would have certainly preferred to be destined for something else (metering for example, or "photometry" as they call it. On the other hand, it's okay too, the camera has a billion buttons and wheels anyway, even too many. In fact I put 8 items in the Q menu and I could not even use the rest (if we count all the dials and the keys are more than 20, to which is added the Q menu which has another 16 slots). The menus are in my opinion very confusing, with incomprehensible names (why is the zoom called "check"? And call it "zoom" right?) and some items are disabled in some cases without the slightest explanation. Sometimes you are forced to look online for the reason and it is something I hate. The files seem to me to be excellent and very malleable. The stabilization also seems good to me but I have shitty hands so I can't say how much. I am amazed by the lack of metering for the highlights, present on Sony and Ricoh and which is missing on both Fuji and Canon (I don't know Nikon). A piece of advice I would give to all those who come from other brands: when you take it, sit down for 2 hours and look at the meaning of all the items on the menu. Edit: The stabilization surprised me. I can do even 1" without blur with 16-80. Not bad.

ttartisan_m28_f5-6TTArtisan M 28mm f/5.6

Pros: Small, very small; light; "all metal" as Richard would say, Image Quality; f5.6

Cons: the cap weighs almost as much as the lens; the silver version is quite very ugly; backlight flare as if it were raining

Opinion: Bought to use it on Sony with adapter, it's my main lens when I go out knowing I'll be home before night (or if I'm in the 50k ISO mood). It's very small and perfect for the street (what do I need an f1.4 if I always shoot at f8?) even if, at least on Sony, it's a bad shot. If only I had found the black version... the one when it "fades" becomes beautiful, while the "silver" version is just ugly and with no way out. On the body of the A7c then, with the adapter, it is just an eyesore. I got it used and the cap was losing a bit of the inner "sheath", so I scraped it off: now it doesn't stand up anymore because it only works for clutch and PESA, so I lose it every now and then. I'm looking for a plastic one to replace but 37mm are not very common and I don't want to buy it on temu. I have no idea what "the real deal" is, the Leica summaron, because I'm still poor, but this lens amazed me with its robustness: all metal and a nice weight considering the size. The image quality for me is more than satisfactory, since I prefer vintage lenses and, as they say, "with character" (those badly designed in short, like the voigtlander 35mm f1.4, the most beautiful lens in the world, too bad it's 35mm). The contrast is sometimes a little lacking (nothing not recoverable in PP), the flare is often lurking (and it's a really ugly flare and not at all artistic) and the lens has a certain vignetting (which I don't mind, since I would add it to all the photos anyway. If I use this lens I just don't add it in PP to have it "standard"). The packaging is also quite nice. I'm not a big fan of the infinity lock mechanism but it's a detail. The aperture can only be adjusted by stop (5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22) without third parties or means and I appreciate it. Basically: for me it is a very good lens. There is what you need and nothing more. I would like to see many more that follow this philosophy instead of seeing lenses that are more and more "pro" and larger and brighter (and expensive).

ricoh_gr_iiiRicoh GR III

Pros: Compactness, sharpness, Snap focus

Cons: Night AF, Construction, Price, WB and Software/Firmware Issues

Opinion: Bought by desperation (why doesn't any other brand do something like this?!) I have a love-hate relationship with her. It is very small and pocket-sized, it makes no noise or almost, it is invisible. Since I bought it, my "keepers" have increased by at least 100%. Perfect for "belly" shots, but only during the day and/or with a lot of light. When evening falls I realized that it is better to leave it at home: the AF does not hook one even by mistake (we are not talking about a few photos to throw away, we are talking about 90% sometimes) and the limits of the sensor are all felt and the various denoisers help only partially. The construction is at the minimum for an expensive machine like this: the feeling is not of great robustness and I am always afraid that a key will remain in my hand or that the lens mechanism will stop working (but maybe I'm paranoid). Mine then had a factory problem and it was repaired for more than two months and needed the replacement of the "motherboard" (machine bought new 3 months before, Ricoh thought it was better to keep it 2 months instead of giving me a new one). The white balance always needs corrections because it almost never satisfies me in automatic or zone (maybe it's my eyes). It also has some problems with the automatic rotation of photos (it simply doesn't turn them very often) and with exposure, especially if you use the one for highlights (I have this impression: on Sony the camera lowers the exposure so as not to burn anything, instead on Ricoh the high lights are taken as a reference of medium gray, so everything else becomes very very dark) In short: an overpriced car because it is unique in its kind, perfect for the "instinctive" street during the day. If there was something like that, maybe I would sell it, but it's not there, so I keep it and take it with me every time I go out. Edit May 2025: it is back under warranty because it still crashes. Let's see if now they replace it or give me back the money. I can't tell if it's a m machine or if it's Ricoh that has an m assistance. In any case, if I went back I wouldn't take it. If they give me the money back, I will take something different. Edit July 2025: they replaced it and this one has no problems for now. I started to get used to the lack of the viewfinder and I feel good. For a few weeks I have been shooting only with her and I must say that she does not disappoint me at all. I was very angry with Ricoh for the bad assistance but there is nothing to do, it is the best compact on the market. I'm considering taking the GRiiiX now...

sony_fe28-60Sony FE 28-60mm f/4-5.6

Pros: Small, light, sharp, economical if taken in kit

Cons: Not so small when opened, dark, new price, closing mechanism scares me

Opinion: I took the A7C without this lens because, at the time, I was not very interested in focal lengths from 28 to 60. A year later, partly because I started shooting differently, partly because I read it so well, I decided to take it to try it out. I honestly don't understand how he can get such a high grade. For heaven's sake, it is a very good goal, but the 10 would deserve it if it were f2.8.. It is true, it is sharp at all apertures, but even at the minimum focal length we are talking about an f4 and a 5.6 at 60mm, there are few lenses that do not perform with those openings. There is also a lot of talk about its size: even here, very true, it is really small, but only when it is closed and therefore not usable. The locking system then, to my hands, seems delicate (but it is only my impression). Ultimately it is an excellent lens if taken in kit and paid € 150 new, to keep there without annoyance and / or use, as opposed to some crap that usually comes in kit that you can not wait to get rid of. Taking it used, as I did, increases the price (also accomplices the pdm who take it to 150 and resell it to 200 and sony that sells it new at senseless prices) and does not have, in my opinion, much sense, at least for the use I make of it.

tamron_28-200rxdTamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD

Pros: Focal range, f2.8 to 28mm, relatively cheap and light to be what it is

Cons: In the end none. Maybe the lack of stabilization and a not really lightning fast AF

Opinion: I took this lens looking for a handyman to carry around every day. I was undecided between the various 24-105, 24-70, 28-75 etc but in the end I decided to take this because I noticed that I shoot much more on the telephoto side than wide-angle (in everyday photos) and a 70-200, in addition to being more bulky, would have been too pushed. I use it with the sony A7c so it remains relatively small and lightweight. Of course, coming from m43 there is a big difference but also in a positive way. It would have been nice if it were smaller, lighter and brighter (as for every lens, on the other hand) but in hindsight there are not many alternatives: the various all-rounders are, in the end, large and heavy equal, if not more (removed the 28-60 but you can not compare with a 28-200, of course) and the various 70-200 are always larger and heavier, although brighter. Ultimately since I took it I have not taken it out of the camera body and I have not used anything else and I do not really feel the need, for now.

minolta_500reflexMinolta AF Reflex 500mm f/8

Pros: Relatively light and small (in the end it's a 500mm!), Autofocus, sometimes cheap, looks sturdy

Cons: Never really sharp, on Sony FE with adapter only one central focus point (unless you buy the monster) and very slow, f8 fixed, difficult to use in MF, focusing distance

Opinion: I had this borrowed from a friend who hadn't used it in 20 years. I put it on m43 to have a 1000mm equivalent and I was very disappointed. Soft photos always (and soft micromovy type, not halo type), very difficult to focus in manual, f8 that always needed very high iso that on m43 you pay dearly. In the end I left it there. Then I bought an A7c and wanted to try it with the LA-EA4 adapter. Here everything changes. You lose 1/3 stop so it practically becomes an f9 but I can shoot at 6400 iso without losing too much detail. Of course, the sharpness has not improved much, but 'AF allows you to have much more usable photos and the 500mm difference compared to m43 perhaps hide the flaws. Does it stand up to comparison with the various 150-400, 200-600 etc? Mahh, to see the samples of the new lenses I would say no. But those lenses cost 3-4 times more. If you find it little, you already have an adapter (or a Sony with a mount) and it hurts your back, surely it is a very fun lens. I must say that I still have to use it in full light where I can keep the iso even lower and the times even faster, so there is definitely room for improvement. There was a photo I took this morning that was as sharp as a modern lens, just one. I still have to understand why. I forgot one thing: the focusing distance is so great. So it is impossible to fill the frame with small subjects such as small rodents or similar

olympus_m40-150rOlympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f/4-5.6 R

Pros: Sharp at all lengths (yes, even at 150mm), 300mm equivalent, economical, small, lightweight

Cons: All plastic, a bit dark, is history that those of olympus do not give you the hood, AF not really at the top

Opinion: Coupled with the 9-18, on two em10mkii bodies, they were my "all-rounder" targets. One for near and one for far. It's all plastic but it really weighs nothing and I've never had any problems (I even fell to the ground once and only the metal of the protective filter bent). A bit 'dark at 150mm, especially considering that you are shooting on m43 with all the problems that start at 1600 iso, but if there is light goes to god. I will say more: very often I came home with better photos of my friend with the 5Dmk3 and the 70-200 f2.8... Af is painful, but that can also be the body certainly not performing. I didn't take a thing on the fly if it stood still in the middle.

olympus_m45Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 45mm f/1.8

Pros: Microscopic, sharp already at 1.8, cheap, lightweight, I like to play with the removable ring when I get bored, 2 colors :D

Cons: I can't find any

Opinion: I have been using it for the last 3-4 years as a lens for very narrow portraits. I never thought badly of it, not even once. Also when I go to dinners with friends it is the only lens I wear. It's one of the best (all things considered) lenses I've ever tried, if not the best: it costs nothing, it's bright, it's light, it's small... It's not tropicalized ok but I don't think its main use is in the rain.

olympus_m9-18Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 9-18mm f/4.0-5.6

Pros: Small, lightweight, sharp, relatively inexpensive, 18mm equivalent, 52 filters,

Cons: Not very bright, ugly, very ugly, even uglier with the hood, not tropicalized, quite plastic

Opinion: It was the lens that really made me love wide-angle lenses. Many complain about the quality, my specimen has always seemed excellent to me. Before this I used the 16-35 f4 canon EF and I never missed it, especially for the weight and bulk. Of course it is not beautiful and it is not even tropicalized, but in the end used it is also relatively little and if you do not have great needs it is fine like that. If I had to choose a single lens for the m43 system I would undoubtedly choose this one (among those I tried)
