sony_zeiss24-70_f4Sony FE 24-70mm f/4 ZA OSS Vario Tessar T*

Pros: Sharpness, compactness and lightness

Cons: Nobody

Opinion: I recently bought this lens and I wanted to give my opinion. I state that I tested this lens with the Sony A7 IV. I won't dwell so much on the video part, I'll just say that the stabilization, fluidity and silence are impeccable. On the photo side, already at full aperture "f/4" was exceptional on all excursions, sharp and contrasted images. I made a comparison with the fixed Zeiss 35 f/2.8 always on the same camera with the same focal length and the 24-70 was much sharper and more incisive. I have to point out one thing: the distortion, vignetting and chromaticism (but especially the distortion) is quite evident at the focal length of 24mm, then from 35 to 60 it is quite contained until it decays to 70mm, although much less than the first focal length. Well, I found this result when you go to edit the raw files with software other than that of the Sony C Imaging Edge. I suppose that the Sony software applies by default the correction of the lens/lens distortion in reference to the exif data of the photo, without any cropping of the image. The fact is that both raw and jpeg files provide almost perfect images, all imperfections are eliminated or very, very contained. Again, this lens really impressed me not only because of the build quality but because of the beautiful images it provides. It is well known that there are negative comments on this goal, and I do not want to open discussions, also so that those who post their comments assume that in addition to being faithful they are based on their own experience. One thing I noticed is that there are different wordings on the front of the lens; on the older version there is the inscription Carl Zeiss, while the most recent one only Zeiss (like the one I tested). I don't know if the quality controls have changed between the two versions, or if luck has been on my side, in any case I'm very happy to have chosen this lens, also because it is oriented towards practicality and compactness. I would add that it is not always easy to give an opinion on a lens because we have different tastes, but if the images are devoid of sharpness, contrast or result from bottle bottoms, these are bad for everyone. On the other hand, I can say that my opinion comes from decades of years of practice (since the days of film) and based on the performance of the lenses in my credit such as Canon L series, Zeiss and Leitz. A well-deserved grade 9 just because it's not an f/2.8, where the boket part would be better, but as mentioned if you want to contain weight and size this is a great choice. Highly recommended.
