canon_400_f2-8isCanon EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS USM

Pros: Brightness, bokeh, exceptional sharpness already at full opening, af

Cons: Weight and difficulty in finding any spare parts

Opinion: If you are an exception for weight, which after a day of freehand makes itself felt (which is why I often prefer to use it on monopiede) is a flawless optics. Despite the weight I also used it duplicated for shots on the fly with excellent results. Unreastable clarity already open even in very bad light conditions, which allows you to enhance any detail. Wonderful bokeh that blends any background giving a crazy prominence to the subject. And then the brightness: at dawn or sunset it is spectacular, sometimes a real march more than other fixed (and I speak also having the 500 4). If it is short in bird life (often use with 1.4 it becomes necessary unless you shoot to powered subjects, without being affected by af or image quality) for ungulates it is perfect. After two years of intensive use vote 9.5.

canon_500_f4isCanon EF 500mm f/4 L IS USM

Pros: Sharpness also multiplied, brightness, bokeh, construction solidity

Cons: Difficulty any spare parts

Opinion: Where to start? I have been using this lens for more than a year and it has given me a lot of satisfaction. Both on 1dx and 7d2 it has a fast af that becomes very fast if you use the limiter. I have to admit that the sharpness is fantastic, I would say equal to 400 2.8 is that I also use, which I didn't think possible at first. In birdlife with subjects around 10/15 meters the detail is stunning. The bokeh is splendid and the brightness (added to what has been said so far) still makes it much higher than all the tele zooms released on the market in more recent years (apart from perhaps the various 200-400 cannikon, with which you still see it at least on par). Of course it weighs a little and compared to similar but newer optics it is perhaps slightly unbalanced forward but nothing that prevents its use freehand, for me. On the other hand, I cannot attribute them to optics: age makes any spare parts difficult to find and in Italy for those who do birdlife it can sometimes be a little short, but it holds the 1.4x very well without loss of quality or responsiveness in autofocus. I was skeptical when I bought it used at the store, but it convinced me to the point of excellent photos. For me it still remains an exceptional perspective despite the age and the market that always jumps to the new. Vote 9.5.

canon_7d_mark2Canon 7D Mark II

Pros: Autofocus in general, burst, silent shot

Cons: ISO high yields in low light, autofocus conditions in complex background conditions

Opinion: I have been owning this camera for more than a year and that some "defects" I found I noticed them only by comparing it to a series 1. Perfect autofocus in optimal conditions, if it gets away with complex backgrounds if the subject occupies a good portion of frame. Perfect for birds where thanks to the apsc format allows you to portray subjects without getting too close. Silent shot that helps a lot with dodgy subjects, only real mole is the high iso yield that clearly can not be that of a ff like the series 5. The customizable burst of up to 10 fps is another ace in the machine of a light body and that has a correct price for its qualities. In my opinion a very good room, grade 9

canon_1dxCanon 1DX

Pros: All

Cons: If I really have to find one at all costs then I would say the lack of silent click for certain situations of naturalistic photography. But the merits are such as to make this "defect" uninfluential or almost.

Opinion: Just fabulous. Extraordinary focus (coming from a 7d Mark II that still has a very good autofocus, this is another planet), hooks the subject to the flight even with complicated backgrounds. Dynamic range that allows you to grasp details that almost escape the naked eye. Great yield at high ISO. If you need it, the gust doesn't leave you on foot. Balances the weight of fixed canvases perfectly, making it easier to use them. What about it? If you really have to look for the hair in the egg then the silent shot is the only mole. But it's a missing comma on a perfect page. Before I took it I had the doubt of the 5d Mark IV – more recent and much appreciated by those who own it – so much so that I had gone to try it. Already after two exits with the 1DX I realized that between the two there is no history – without taking anything away from the 5d. After 6 months of intense use I can conclude that for naturalistic photography the 1 DX is the best choice I could make. It's a war machine that practically doesn't miss a beat when set properly. And if you try the impossible shot you know that this machine has a good chance of doing it anyway! Rating 9.5.
