La Torre di Belem fu commissionata dal re Giovanni II come parte di un sistema di difesa alla foce del fiume Tejo e come porta cerimoniale di Lisbona. La torre fu costruita nei primi anni del XVI secolo ed è un esempio lampante dello stile manuelino portoghese.
