Serengeti,Tanzania

Strange situation, usually it is laying taking to drink, and that makes them vulnerable to predators .... great document !!!!!

Indeed Diego: generally take this acrobatic and risky posture to drink and can not do otherwise! In February last, in the Serengeti, for the first time I saw a giraffe bending to graze small shrubs ...
I posted this photo to the special setting out for ME, insolita.wow! Wow!

I do not think guys were eating, the grass is not part of his diet, only leaves and buds that collects from the tops of the trees (the most tender and tasty are at the top). Acacias as we see are not far away. I think he's licking something here and the fact worries me if it was the refusal of some "imb .... ille savannah" -D Some animals, but it would be the first time I see the giraffe, lick stones, as well as elephants drinking eat mud to absorb the minerals that their vegetarian diet does not provide. This enables them a better and smoother digestion. However an interesting document.

Paul, I thought so too! Then sifting in inernet I read something about the power to the ground: nothing exhaustive, however ... :-) :-)
The way they drink is explained by the fact that the heart is very powerful (having to pump blood to the brain that is 3 meters higher). If the giraffe bring the head lower than the heart muscle it would reach the blood to the brain with a blood pressure excessive and therefore potentially lethal. Even the position for which you are located while drinking can be maintained only for a short time because it creates discomfort. -D
So also any food to the level of the soil could be hired for short periods of time.

When you do not have to eat that move, are very resistant animals and drink little, Mother Nature always the pros and cons, they eat the choicest morsels but what to drink, sharing what you have written is problematic. Also consider that in this pose are really quite vulnerable.
