Verso mezzogiorno col sole alto all'orizzonte (purtroppo) i drivers vedono questa bellissima aquila in cima ad un acacia dove si era appena posata con la sua preda, una mangusta. Per oltre mezz'ora si è cibata tranquillamente, dapprima strappando la pelliccia e successivamente grossi bocconi di carne... Poi l'abbiamo vista, inquieta, scrutare l'orizzonte a lungo. Dopo un po' anche a noi si è rivelato il motivo: stavano sopraggiungendo gli avvoltoi che, volteggiando a spirale, si abbassavano sempre più sull'acacia. Ad un certo momento, molto innervosita la marziale si è involata, come per affrontare gli avvoltoi o, più probabilmente, per fare una manovra diversiva: è stato a quel punto che, improvvisamente, sorprendendo anche noi che ce ne siamo accorti soltanto all'ultimo momento, è arrivata l'aquila Rapace: in un attimo si è eclissata con i resti della preda. La marziale è prontamente tornata all'albero ma, ormai, troppo tardi per salvare il suo pasto. Così, credo, sarà più chiara la lettura della foto-sequenza. 1) Questo è il momento in cui l'aquila Marziale si invola, lasciando i resti della mangusta,incustoditi, sull'acacia. Si noti la protuberanza del gozzo, per l'abbondante pasto e la possanza delle zampe, molto muscolose e lunghe.
