first of all congratulations for the beautiful pictures of these beautiful places that, like you, I've also had the chance to see last year !! ;-)
And indeed your shots make me think back to the many good moments lived there! :-)
Instead, if I even I being a happy owner of the D90 from 7 years and having read your post about a possible replacement for the same, I can confirm you that the quality of this machine and, after all, also those "of 'honest' 18-105 .. I did most of my shots with this goal and only recently I took the Sigma 17-70 .. and I have yet to figure out if I was right to take it !! -D
As you have already recommended in the post (I think was Roby) I would tell you too, just to start,to dare a little more with the post-production as it is true that all the pictures you see on this site (and others) have little or a lot, "touched up" and that in fact there is nothing wrong in doing so to assuming you do not distorts the image starting .. if you do you will be amazed of the results obtained with our "obsolete" equipment !! -D
Take for example this your picture .. I can hardly believe that the Badlands at sunset tones had so "pale" -D simply tries to intervene on the brightness, contrast and colors, and I think you will find yourself in front of nice surprises .. and he tells you that one of PP knows little enough !! -D
Then if you use the reflex almost always "free hand" in your travels I think convenga privilege the lightness of an APS-C in the face of a better quality (if used to best ..) of a Full Frame, and then reasoning (also as regards the objectives) accordingly !! ;-)

innanzitutto complimenti per le belle foto di questi splendidi luoghi che, come te, ho avuto anche io la fortuna di vedere l'anno scorso!!
E in effetti i tuoi scatti mi fanno ripensare ai tanti bei momenti vissuti laggiù!
Invece, se posso permettermi essendo anche io un felice possessore della D90 da ben 7 anni ed avendo letto il tuo post in merito ad una eventuale sostituta della stessa, non posso che confermarti le qualità di questa macchina e, tutto sommato, anche quelle "dell'onesto" 18-105.. io ho fatto la maggior parte dei miei scatti con questo obiettivo e solo ultimamente ho preso il 17-70 della Sigma.. e devo ancora capire se ho fatto bene a prenderlo!!
Come ti hanno già consigliato nel post (mi sembra sia stato Roby) ti direi anche io, tanto per iniziare, di osare un pò di più con la PostProduzione in quanto è vero che tutte le foto che vedi in questo sito (e non solo) sono, poco o tanto, "ritoccate" e che di fatto non c'è niente di male nel farlo a patto che non si stravolga l'immagine di partenza.. se lo farai ti meraviglierai dei risultati ottenuti con le nostre "vetuste" dotazioni!!
Prendiamo ad esempio questa tua foto.. faccio fatica a credere che le Badlands al tramonto avessero delle tonalità così "smorte" prova semplicemente ad intervenire sulla luminosità, sul contrasto e sui colori e credo che ti troverai di fronte a delle belle sorprese.. e te lo dice uno che di PP ne sa abbastanza poco!!
Poi se utilizzi la reflex quasi sempre a "mano libera" durante i tuoi viaggi credo ti convenga privilegiare la leggerezza di una APS-C a fronte di una migliore qualità (se usata al meglio..) di una Full Frame e quindi ragionare (anche per quanto riguarda gli obiettivi) di conseguenza!!
