Situato sulle sponde del fiume Mondego, il "Mosteiro de Santa Cruz" è uno dei più antichi e importanti monumenti di Coimbra, fondato nel 1131 dai Canonici Regolari di Sant'Agostino. D. Afonso Henriques, primo re del Portogallo, assisteva qui alle funzioni religiose di ritorno dalle sue battaglie di Riconquista Cristiana. Forse per questo lo scelse per il suo riposo eterno, al pari del figlio D. Sancho I. Santa Cruz fu la culla dei primi studi medievali in Portogallo, che con la loro azione educativa avrebbero rafforzato il potere reale emergente. Fu tra le sue pareti che una delle figure più universali della cultura occidentale del XII e del XIII secolo, Sant'Antonio, dottore della Chiesa, approfondì gli studi teologici e la vasta conoscenza delle Sacre Scritture, cosa evidente nei suoi sermoni. La chiesa, il chiostro e le cappelle furono ricostruiti nel XVI secolo su progetto di Diogo de Boitaca, imponendosi come una delle opere più belle del Rinascimento artistico portoghese. Si conservano a tutt'oggi, malgrado i danni provocati dall'uomo e dal tempo, dettagli magnifici: la facciata, il pulpito e i sepolcri reali, il chiostro del silenzio, i bassorilievi del chiostro e i quadri della sacrestia.
