Il papiro era un mezzo costoso e perciò al suo posto frammenti di vasi e scaglie di calcare (chiamati ostraka o al singolare ostrakon) venivano utilizzati per ogni tipo di testi: contratti, ricevute, lettere, storie, esercizi di scrittura e di disegni. Questi ostraka rivelano alcuni aspetti della vita privata e della cultura degli Egizi. Questo magnifico bozzetto di una fanciulla che esegue una flessione all'indietro sfida molte delle convenzioni dell'arte egizia. La donna è seminuda, con indosso un pareo nero e poco altro, tranne gli orecchini a cerchio in oro (un ornamento costoso per chiunque nell'antichità). È raffigurata, mentre si piega, perfettamente di profilo, non nella consueta postura eretta e rigida con le spalle di fronte e solo le gambe di profilo. Sono raffigurati in modo realistico anche i contorni della gamba e del braccio sullo sfondo. I capelli ondulati della danzatrice sono sciolti e fluenti, ma gli orecchini sfidano la gravità poiché non ricadono. La vivezza e la qualità artistica nel disegno di questo schizzo sensuale testimoniano un alto livello di perizia e suggeriscono che fosse opera di un artigiano regale che lavorava nella Valle dei Re. Anche questo come molti altri ostraka, può provenire da Deir el-Medina. Nuovo Regno, XIX dinastia (1292-1186 a.C.)
