Giorno 1 al Kruger National Park, ottobre 2011. Abbiamo varcato i cancelli non sapendo bene cosa aspettarci, è stato il mio primo safari in assoluto e l'emozione era davvero tanta. Il giorno prima aveva incredibilmente grandinato (addirittura sverniciando le auto e scortecciando gli alberi, era saltata anche la corrente ed erano 10 anni che non capitava a Phalaborwa). Il ranger ci aveva preavvisato che probabilmente avremmo visto poco perchè gli animali, che fino a due giorni prima erano in cerca disperata di acqua per via dell'apice della stagione secca, ora aveva in abbondanza pozze d'acqua ad ogni angolo di parco. Senza scoraggiarci minimamente iniziamo ad addentrarci sempre di più ed effettivamente non c'era molto da vedere, qualche impala (come definito dal ranger il Mc Donald del parco) e qualche rapace lontano. All'improvviso arriviamo ad un incrocio con una delle innumerevoli vie sterrate e guardando in quella direzione c'era questa giraffa che camminava solitaria lungo la via. All'improvviso la situazione si riempì di significato e tutto divenne estremamente affascinante. Il ranger si mise di traverso (per permettermi di fotografare meglio) e spense la macchina. A quel punto il forte vento che ancora spirava a tratti si sentì in maniera decisa e guardare il cammino di questa giraffa che ondulava leggermente e sinuosamente il collo divenne improvvisamente ipnotico. Tutto intorno era scomparso, esisteva solo quella via, il vento, e quell'elegantissima giraffa che ignara di noi andava verso il suo futuro.
