Interesting composition. Like the perspective, the pose, and the variegated colored "weeds" on the beach. With the bright light reflecting off the water, the subject appears a little harsh. You might want to think about increasing your shutter speed to at least 1/400 when shooting the 400 5.6 hand held. With no IS it's a challenge getting really sharp images with slower shutter speeds handheld. Just some thoughts. Hope it's helpful. Wally

Thank you Curtis. You're right as far as the shutter speed, but I did not want to push beyond ISO 400. The 40D in such conditions was already at the limit of the noise.

Thanks for all the advice :-)

Enigma,
Just to follow up. Based on the light levels in this image, it appears that you would have had enough light to go to 1/400 without exceeding ISO 400 and still get a good exposure. Don't know what mode you were shooting in. With my 40D I can normally get to around ISO 600-800 before noise becomes a significant concern. I would rather sacrifice a little noise to avoid a soft image. As you probably know, a reasonable amount of noise can be dealt with in post processing. Whereas a blurred image is a blurred image! Once again, if this is helpful great. If not, just let it go. Wally

Honestly, for me at 600-800 ISO is practically unusable. So much for my personal experience. Surely here the light was hard, but I do not find that the shot is blurred it nor soft. In any case your consigili are always very welcome :-)

Enigma,
Based on your response to my latest comments, it appears that what I said may have offended you. If so, I'm sorry. I'm sure you know the limitations of your equipment well in relation to the situation you were shooting. I can see now that my comments went beyond what I had really intended and were taken more personal. I don't often offer advice on this site but when I do the intent is to simply share information in the hopes that we can all become better photographers. In this case, I didn't say it well. Please forgive me. Wally

Hey, Wally, I did not take anything personally, I'm not that kind of person. God forbid :)
According to me in the 600-800 ISO 40D can take advantage of them only in certain lighting conditions, but tends to regard my personal experience, after the 400 tends to mix the images too. I am here to share information and to learn. This photo is not without its flaws, otherwise I would not have mass. So do not worry, no offense :-)
