L'elemento più simbolico e caratteristico di Tarquinia è senza dubbio la Necropoli Etrusca di Monterozzi, un sito archeologico di eccezionale interesse, dichiarato patrimonio dell'umanità dall'UNESCO nel 2004. Si tratta di un vasto complesso di camere funerarie scavate nella roccia e sormontate da tumuli risalenti al VII secolo a.C. Unico modo per fotografare e presentare le tombe è attraverso la porta a vetro. Il sito comprende 6000 sepolcri ed è conosciuto soprattutto per le 200 tombe dipinte con affreschi che rappresentano il più grande nucleo pittorico giunto a noi dall'arte etrusca, nonché la più ampia documentazione di tutta la pittura antica precedente l'età romana. La tomba, costituita da un solo ambiente rettangolare, risale alla seconda metà del VI secolo a.C. ed è stata scoperta nel 1961. Sotto il timpano appaiono contrapposte, come in tante altre tombe dipinte, due fiere, un leone rosso ed una pantera azzurra. La scena principale si svolge sulla parete di fondo e mostra un uomo anziano seduto su uno sgabello, probabilmente il defunto, che assiste ai giochi di destrezza eseguiti dai giocolieri: un acrobata che lancia dei dischi verso un candelabro che una graziosa fanciulla tiene in equilibrio sulla testa, un suonatore di flauto accompagna l'esibizione, un giovane nudo, con accanto due bambini sembra intento a commentare lo spettacolo, sulla parete opposta è visibile una scena di danza in cui quattro danzatrici vengono accompagnate da un suonatore di siringa (uno strumento a fiato), ed ancora un anziano con barba che si appoggia ad un bastone ed è sorretto da un ragazzo. La decorazione mostra anche la scena con evidente valore apotropaico di un uomo accovacciato che sta defecando.
