La zona presbiteriale è sorretta da due arconi che l'attraversano per tutta la larghezza, foto di copertina, forse sono proprio loro ad aver contribuito alla salvezza della Basilica di San Pietro a Tuscania nel violento sisma del 6 Febbraio 1971 che provocò gravissimi danni al ricco patrimonio artistico. I danni più ingenti si riscontrarono qui a San Pietro, dove crollarono il rosone della facciata principale e parte dell'abside con raffigurata l'Ascensione di Cristo, pittura datata fra l'ultimo quarto dell'XI secolo e la metà del XII. La priorità fu la messa in sicurezza della superfici dei dipinti murali rimasti ancorati alle pareti e la raccolta dei frammenti di quelli crollati. I frammenti furono estratti dalle macerie con grande attenzione e collocati in cassette di legno, seguendo un sistema di raccolta per settori. L'anno successivo, presso i laboratori dell'Istituto Centrale per il Restauro, venne fatto un tentativo di ricomposizione, tentativo presto abbandonato a causa dell'esigua dimensione e della fragilità del materiale. L'Iscr avviato nel 2006 il progetto di conservazione, ricomposizione e valorizzazione dei frammenti dell'affresco absidale, ma i risultati del primo studio di fattibilità, hanno dimostrato che la superficie potenzialmente sviluppata dai frammenti disponibili corrisponderebbe solo a circa un terzo della superficie crollata. Tale scarsità di materiale ha quindi suggerito, fin dall'inizio del progetto, forme di valorizzazione diverse dalla ricollocazione in sito.
