L'Averla maggiore (Lanius excubitor) è una specie di passeriforme molto particolare: assomiglia a un piccolo rapace più che agli affini passeri. Infatti il carattere distintivo di questi uccelli è il becco adunco con un dente terminale come quello dei falchi. In effetti l'Averla maggiore è un predatore formidabile, non a caso il termine generico latino “Lanius” significa “macellaio“. L'Averla maggiore differenzia la sua dieta a seconda delle stagioni: in primavera ed estate si basa fortemente su grandi insetti, come Coleotteri o Ortotteri (cavallette) mentre in autunno e inverno sui vertebrati; le prede preferite sono comunque i micromammiferi, ma non disdegna anche piccoli rettili e uccelli mentre solo occasionalmente si nutre di bacche o carogne. Altra peculiarità della specie è la creazione di dispense alimentari: soprattutto in inverno sfrutta i rami dei rovi e altre piante spinose per infilzare le prede che non consuma subito, per cibarsene in un secondo momento.
