Attraverso Campo Imperatore e la sua spoglia e struggente bellezza della quale il mio occhio non è mai sazio, ma nel cuore di quest'estate di fuoco, a restarmi addosso è la sensazione d'un sole amaro che impietoso prosciuga le fonti e annichilisce le erbe. Quando avverto il bisogno d'un riparo, ad offrirmelo è la strada che scende sul versante teramano. Il percorso, d'un tratto, si fa ombroso mentre, a fatica, attraversa la solennità di secolari foreste di faggi. Un'aria fresca e umida sale dalle forre. Al fondo di quella tortuosa discesa, raggiungo il borgo di Castelli, alle cui spalle si staglia l'imponente parete del Monte Camicia. Il centro storico mostra gli sfregi del terremoto che ancora oggi lo rende inagibile. La bellezza dei suoi vicoli, che come uno sperone si protendono nella valle, è orfana di vita e a soffrirne è tutta la comunità. Questa terra ricca di acque cristalline, boschi e vene argillose, ha cullato una delle più straordinarie scuole di ceramica dell'Italia centrale, deviando così dalla tradizionale economia agro pastorale del Gran Sasso. Vado in cerca della bottega storica di un anziano ceramista, Vincenzo. I suoi 90 anni non impediscono che ogni giorno l'argilla si insinui ancora tra le mani. Racconta il mestiere con una cura tale da cui è impossibile non comprendere quanta dignità abbia donato alla sua esistenza. Ha gli occhi chiari e accesi di chi ha edificato la propria vita sulle verità di un lavoro onesto e umano. Il vecchio tornio a pedale è circondato da centinaia di stampi risalenti anche all'800 che rappresentano la storia della ceramica di questi luoghi. Lo osservo mentre con passo ancora agile e vigoroso vorrebbe mostrarmi ogni angolo del laboratorio, ciascun passaggio delle lavorazioni. E sulle prime, ho l'istinto di dirgli di non affaticarsi troppo, di preservarsi dagli sforzi. Poi mi rendo conto che, in realtà, sono io a dover ascoltare i suoi consigli su come lo spirito di un uomo possa conservare il meglio di sé per quasi un secolo.
