La necessità di rispondere alle crescenti esigenze del traffico proveniente dal nord, lungo le consolari via Cassia e via Flaminia, in seguito all'aumento del numero di automobili che stava popolando Roma, e quella di creare un accesso monumentale alla città, affinché questa potesse competere con quelli delle grandi capitali europee, furono i motivi che portarono all'edificazione di questo ponte che, con la sua maestosità, ricorda alcune costruzioni della Roma imperiale. Le aquile che lo ornano, infatti, simbolo della potenza militare della Roma dei Cesari, le imponenti colonne in candido travertino che sorreggono dei lampioni, fanno evidentemente riferimento all'antica Roma, alla cui architettura si ispirava diffusamente la propaganda fascista che della grandiosità scenografica delle sue costruzioni fece il suo segno distintivo. Del progetto del ponte fu incaricato l'architetto Armando Brasini (1869-1965) e i lavori, affidati alla società Tecnobeton e supervisionati dall'ingegner Aristide Giannelli (1888-1970), cominciarono nel 1938; il nome inizialmente scelto, XXVIII Ottobre, avrebbe dovuto celebrare i fasti fascisti e in particolare il giorno della Marcia su Roma. A causa, però, dei danneggiamenti che le strutture già realizzate subirono durante la II Guerra Mondiale, le attività di costruzione dovettero essere sospese nel 1943, per riprendere solo nel 1947 a conflitto terminato. Il nuovo ponte, che collega la antica via Flamina con via Cassia, fu inaugurato nel 1951 e chiamato Ponte della Libertà in onore della riconquistata democrazia. Il nome definitivo, assunto nel 1961, fu quello di Flaminio, a richiamare l'omonima via consolare. Lungo 254,94 metri e largo 27, ponte Flaminio si sviluppa su sette arcate ed è realizzato in calcestruzzo interamente rivestito da travertino romano dalle calde tonalità bianche. Nanni Moretti, pluripremiato regista romano, ne celebra la straordinaria bellezza nel film Caro Diario, dove afferma: ”Non lo so, non riesco a capire. Sarò malato, ma io amo questo ponte. Ci devo passare almeno due volte al giorno”.
