Alla destra del Tanaro, è collocato su una dorsale a dominio della pianura verso Alba. Il castello, posto sulla sommità del paese, è guarnito di due poderose torri del XII e XV secolo. Il nucleo storico è abbarbicato attorno ad esso e alla torre campanaria del XIII secolo; le stradine disegnano cerchi concentrici. nteressante è anche la parrocchiale dell'Assunta, in stile barocco. La festa patronale si svolge l'ultima domenica di agosto. Il nome del paese viene fatto derivare dal celtico “raud” o “rod”, che significa “fiume”: sicuramente di antichissima origine, sede di un insediamento pre-romano, al tempo dei romani “Raudum”, fu centro di raccordo tra la vicina Alba Pompeia e l'allora grande Pollentia. Secondo gli storici, nella pianura sottostante il paese si combatté la battaglia di Pollenzo nel 403 d. C., quando il generale romano Stilicone sconfisse i Goti di Alarico. In seguito Roddi fu sede di un antichissimo monastero; dal 1400 in poi fu sotto il dominio di diverse famiglie (i Falletti di Barolo, il duca di Mantova, i Della Mirandola), finché pervenne ai marchesi Della Chiesa di Cinzano, che lo ebbero in proprietà fino al 1836, quando fu acquistato dal re Carlo Alberto.
