l castello di Avio è uno dei più noti, antichi e suggestivi monumenti fortificati del Trentino. Dalla sua posizione, sulle pendici del Monte Vignola, il castello domina la valle fin quasi a Verona. Imperdibile il colpo d'occhio sull'imponente mastio, la poderosa cinta muraria e le cinque torri. Probabilmente presidio militare già in epoca longobarda, divenne proprietà della famiglia Castelbarco per passare in seguito ai veneziani nel 1441. Il castello è stato donato nel 1977 dalla contessa Emanuela di Castelbarco al FAI, che vi ha realizzato un'attenta opera di restauro. Entrando si attraversa una porta-torre coronata da merli a coda di rondine. Sulla destra si osserva la mole della torre che spicca tra le mura orientali: è la “Picadora”, chiamata così perché, secondo la tradizione, sulla terrazza venivano impiccati i condannati. All'interno si rimane incantati dagli splendidi cicli di affreschi di scuola veronese: la parata dei combattenti, sulle pareti della Casa delle Guardie, e la stanza dell'amore, eleganti decorazioni di gusto cortese nel mastio. Il Castello di Avio si scorge da lontano. È il tuo primo benvenuto in Trentino.
