Che cos'è il magico quadrato del Sator? È un enigma ancora non risolto: perché su alcuni reperti archeologici è inscritto un testo con la parola SATOR? Nel borgo medievale di Campiglia Marittima (provincia di Livorno), nel cimitero medievale de La Pieve risalente al secolo XII, esiste uno dei pochi esemplari esistenti in Italia del Quadrato del Sator, o Quadrato magico. Ebbene, in secoli di studi e interpretazioni, ancora non si è arrivati a concordare sul significato di queste parole. Esistono solo possibili interpretazioni da parte degli studiosi. Ma qual è la particolarità del Quadrato magico? Sovrapponendo una parola all'altra si ottiene una frase palindroma, cioè che rimane identica letta in qualsiasi verso. Le parole del Quadrato magico del Sator si possono leggere allo stesso modo in orizzontale (dalla prima alla quinta riga) o in verticale (dalla prima alla quinta colonna), o in orizzontale dalla quinta riga alla prima (da destra verso sinistra) o in verticale (dal basso in alto) dalla quinta alla prima colonna. Alcuni studiosi pensano che sia una specie di scongiuro per prevenire disgrazie o una sorta di formula magica per guarire da un male o per superare qualche difficoltà. La parola sator significherebbe Dio (il creatore), mentre tenet significherebbe domina o “regge”, rotas opera significa “le opere del creato” e arepo, parola probabilmente proveniente dalla lingua celtica, significa “aratro”. Secondo alcuni altri studiosi, il Quadrato del Sator sarebbe diventato nel Medioevo una sorta di sigillo dei Cavalieri Templari. L'esemplare più antico del Quadrato del Sator fu scoperto nel 1925 a Pompei, e quindi risalirebbe a circa duemila anni fa (Pompei fu sepolta dall'eruzione del Vesuvio nel 79 dopo Cristo). A Pompei, e risalente alla solita epoca, ne fu scoperto un altro una decina d'anni dopo il primo. Tante le possibili spiegazioni, quindi. Ad esempio che Dio regge il cielo, ossia è il re dei cieli, e l'uomo è il solo responsabile di ciò che accade sulla terra. Oppure che Dio manovra le stelle dell'universo come l'uomo manovra le opere della terra (l'aratro). Insomma, è sempre una specie di colpo al cuore entrare in una cattedrale e vedere il Quadrato del Sator. Un'emozione per qualcosa che sa di magico e di misterioso, di qualcosa che si sa essere molto, molto importante e che non si può spiegare.
