La Baìo di Sampeyre e delle 3 borgate vicine , Calchesio, Villar e Rore, è un' antica festa Alpina nata in tempi assai remoti, inizialmente come rito di ringraziamento per il ritorno della luce dopo i freddi e bui mesi invernali , ma attraverso alcuni periodi storici ha assunto nuovi significati giungendo alla struttura attuale. A tutt' oggi è una manifestazione radicata profondamente nell' opinione popolare e principamente rappresenta una rievocazione storica della vittoria delle popolazioni della valle , riunitesi contro i predoni Saraceni che intorno all' anno mille, provenendo dalla Provenza, saccheggiavano e depredavano tutti i villaggi di quelle vallate Occitane, oggi suddivise tra Italia e Francia. La Baìo si svolge ogni 5 anni e 4 sono le Baie partecipanti (Sampeyre, Calchesio, Villar e Rore) e ognuna di loro sfila con numerosi figuranti in diversi ruoli. I partecipanti sono solo uomini, anche i figuranti in abiti femminili, sia adulti che bambini. Il motivo di questa scelta nasce dal voler ricordare un' astuzia utilizzata contro i Saraceni per sconfiggerli. Quando venivano avvistate le truppe Saracene in prossimità di un Villaggio, molti uomini ben armati, si vestivano da donne per illudere gli invasori di aver vita facile. Nel frattempo altri uomini aggiravano le truppe nemiche per prenderli tra due fuochi. Per questo la Baìo è considerata dalla gente del luogo come la festa della libertà , dell' unione e della pace.
