Un suggestivo convento si erge su un colle nel Nuorese, al centro della Sardegna, come una fortezza monolitica e austera all'esterno, pieno di poesia dentro. Sull'isolato e silente colle di Cuccullio, a poca distanza da Nuoro, sorge maestoso il monastero delle Carmelitane Scalze, realizzato su un progetto di Savin Couelle per ospitare 24 monache. L'architetto francese fu uno dei 'progenitori' della Costa Smeralda, che non abbandonò la Sardegna ma volle sdebitarsi ulteriormente dell'ospitalità disegnando (di sua sponte) un altro capolavoro. La mole del complesso claustrale si eleva come un castello su un monte, grandiosa all'esterno, poetica dentro. L'impressione di una fortezza monolitica e austera svanirà quando varcherai l'ingresso e resterai estasiato dalla suggestione che il geniale Couelle ha saputo infondere, prediligendo povertà di materiali ed eleganza di forme e linee. Il risultato è un'architettura in movimento, fatta di rimandi, simbolismi e giochi di luce. Nell'opera sono racchiusi messaggi teologici come annientamento di Cristo e umiliazione profonda della Croce. Mentre la cupola ottagonale che chiude il santuario, è simbolo dell'ottavo giorno, quello di risurrezione e nuova creazione. Tutta l'opera ha uno sviluppo estremamente verticale: entrato in chiesa, scenderai fino a raggiungere l'altare, il punto più basso, mentre risalirai verso il catino, punto sommo dell'abside. Il tutto a simboleggiare l'Ascensione. Tutto l'edificio ha saliscendi a rappresentare le asperità della vita. Il tabernacolo incuneato nella roccia, invece, è un richiamo alla natura circostante Nuoro, così come la presenza di una conchiglia gigante - proveniente dalle Mauritius - rievoca il mare e l'Isola. La statua lignea della Vergine Maria - da cui la consacrazione alla Mater Salvatoris – proviene dagli Stati Uniti. È mutilata e bruciata, perché risale alla Rivoluzione francese, quando i Giacobini, in segno di disprezzo, mutilavano i simulacri religiosi. Nelle pareti laterali quattro piccole croci di bronzo indicano la data di consacrazione: 29 maggio 1994. ------------------------ S. Teresa di Gesù nacque ad Avila (Spagna) il 28 marzo dell'anno 1515, da nobile ed antica famiglia. Teresa si distinse fin da bambina per un grande amore alla lettura di buoni libri, e specialmente della Sacra Scrittura. Leggendo ad un suo fratellino le gesta dei Martiri, tutti e due furono accesi di santo ardore di morire per il nome di Gesù, ed un giorno, non visti, fuggirono per andare tra i Mori infedeli: « Così, dicevano, voleremo subito in Paradiso! ». Mirabile ingenuità! Ma un loro zio li ricondusse alla casa paterna. Allora pensarono di condurre una vita solitaria e si costruirono una celletta nel giardino, dove si ritiravano in preghiera. A 12 anni le morì la madre e Teresa provò tale dolore da non trovare conforto sulla terra. Pensò allora che le rimaneva un'altra madre ben più amorosa e potente: la Madonna, e a Lei si affidò. Intanto andava preparandosi pel chiostro e a 20 anni seguì la divina chiamata. Si ritirò nel monastero dell'Incarnazione del Monte Carmelo in Avila, dove ben presto rifulse per ogni virtù. Per una grave malattia dovette lasciare il monastero e ritornare in famiglia: guarì, ma perdette il primitivo fervore. Una visione la fece ritornare in sè ed allora si diede con tutte le forze alla propria santificazione. Così si preparò a quella grande riforma dei monasteri Carmelitani, che fu accettata non solo da tutti i monasteri delle suore, ma anche da parecchi conventi dei frati. Aveva conosciuto S. Giovanni della Croce, tenuto in grande fama di dotto e santo, e se ne servi come del più valido aiuto. Indicibili furono i dolori fisici, le penitenze e le discipline, ma sostenne tutto colla più dolce serenità di spirito. Gesù la ricompensava con sublimi estasi, rivelandole verità altissime che ella tramandò nelle sue mirabili « Opere ». Non conosceva altro bene in questa vita che quello d'imitare Gesù Cristo paziente e crocifisso, e si sforzava di acquistare, per mezzo dei patimenti, nuovi meriti per l'eternità. Ammirabile la sua preghiera: « Signore, o patire o morire ». Il suo cuore, infiammato dell'amor di Dio, altro non sospirava che di uscire da questa valle di pianto e di unirsi per sempre al suo diletto Sposo, nella gloria celeste. Il Signore esaudì i fervidi voti e, nel monastero di Alba di Tormes, alla età di 67 anni, passò da questa vita. Era il 13 ottobre del 1582.
