Arrivo a Lucca. Giorni di fine anno. Pioggia fitta e sottile. Ad accogliermi una cinta muraria incredibilmente integra. D'intorno, un magnifico verde a trasmettere un profondo senso di pace. Temperatura dolce, come se quei bastioni, che nessuna battaglia in realtà ebbero mai a vedere, avessero piuttosto bloccato l'avanzare dell'inverno, per quel che ne resta. Un placido ruscello spezza la regolarità della spianata d'erba, dalla quale si stagliano imponenti platani e querce. Sulla sponda, un airone cenerino. Immobile, attende la preda scrutando le trasparenti acque. Cerco la bottega di Angelo. Percorro pochi passi e, d'un tratto, vengo quasi sorpreso dalla magnificenza di quella che scopro essere la Cattedrale di San Martino. Ai suoi piedi un prato curatissimo. Sarà una gioia prenderci il sole con la bella stagione. In un angolo della piazza, discreta, riconosco la mia destinazione. Imposte di legno che ne hanno viste molte. Da sempre al suo interno si lavorano metalli. Argento, ottone e molto altro. La committenza principale non poteva che essere quella Chiesa che sembra star lì, imponente, a vegliare sul loro lavoro. Angelo ha un sorriso sincero, ed un'aria informale che rende leggero il tempo trascorso insieme. Nel mezzo dei nostri strampalati ragionamenti, ogni tanto si affaccia alla porta un prete, un monsignore sorridente ad augurargli buon anno. Fintanto che, nel pomeriggio, a bussare alla vetrina è persino il Vescovo. Un tipo dall'aspetto affabile e i modi aperti. Scopro essere perugino come me. La coincidenza, nella sua insignificanza, strappa comunque ad entrambi una risata. Ho della gerarchia ecclesiastica la stessa ignoranza che "coltivo", sin da ragazzo, per quella militare. Non piove neppure più e Angelo si mette a cesellare una grossa moneta dopo averla fissata a della pece scaldata al cannello. Ho il privilegio di essere accolto amabilmente in una bottega che ha una storia di secoli, tra le più antiche in assoluto di questa splendida città e se metto la testa appena un attimo fuori l'uscio, i miei occhi non riescono a contenere la bellezza che li circonda.
