Una bellissima scena che ho avuto il piacere di osservare a inizio giugno dello scorso anno. Anche quel giorno dopo pranzo sono partito in esplorazione, io fotografo solo al tramonto, di notte e al sorgere del sole, ma parto sempre prima in modo da avere alcune ore per seguire tracce e trovare gli animali. Ogni giorno dalla primavera all'autunno esploro tutto il terreno, osservo bene tutte le piante in cerca di bruchi e altri piccoli animali, in estate ho a disposizione 5 ore prima del tramonto, poi circa 30 minuti per fotografare prima che il sole sparisca dietro le montagne. Il problema più grande da affrontare è il forte caldo, soprattutto quando trasporto gli zaini e i fauna box, ma la natura ha sempre ripagato i miei sforzi. Ho trovato sui finocchietti diversi bruchi di macaone, che ho subito delicatamente raccolto e posizionato nei fauna box per allevarli. Poco prima del tramonto ho visto, ben nascosta tra i finocchietti, questa femmina di Pisaura mirabilis a guardia dei piccoli nel nido. La Pisaura mirabilis è un ragno della famiglia dei Pisauridae, è molto difficile da osservare perché si nasconde benissimo tra la vegetazione, preferisce i posti ombrosi nei prati e ai margini dei boschi. Questo ragno è un abile cacciatore con un'ottima vista, non costruisce la ragnatela ma si nasconde nel terreno o sulle piante e tende agguati alle sue prede, solitamente mosche. Quando è in attesa di una preda, assume una particolare posizione con le prime due paia di zampe allungate in avanti. Il comportamento riproduttivo di questa specie è molto particolare: prima dell'accoppiamento il maschio cattura una preda, la avvolge in un bozzolo di seta e va alla ricerca di una femmina a cui offrirla come regalo. Questa operazione richiede molto tempo e fatica, se l'esemplare non è in forma ha molta difficoltà a preparare il regalo e quindi anche ad accoppiarsi. La preda è importantissima perchè la femmina la mangia durante l'accoppiamento, quindi più è grande più a lungo il maschio può riprodursi. Non sempre riesce a trovare qualcosa di commestibile e per non presentarsi a mani vuote, riempie il suo bozzolo con foglie e rametti, ma deve cercare di finire l'accoppiamento prima che la femmina se ne accorga. Qualche tempo dopo la femmina costruisce un ovisacco di circa 1 cm pieno di uova e lo trasporta tenendolo sotto il prosoma con i cheliceri, si distingue dagli altri ragni che lo trasportano sotto l'addome. Dopo circa due settimane lo attacca alla vegetazione e crea un nido protetto tessendo intorno ad esso una tela grande alcuni centimetri, poi resta di guardia tutto il tempo per sorvegliare lo sviluppo. I piccoli dopo la nascita si raggruppano vicino all'ovisacco, se disturbati si disperdono ma senza scappare e poco dopo tornano di nuovo al nido, anche la madre se disturbata si allontana ma senza perdere di vista i piccoli. La femmina non sopravvive molto a lungo, dal momento che trasporta l'ovisacco con i cheliceri, non può catturare prede e non si nutre. Non si nutre neanche quando sorveglia il nido, per evitare di lasciare i piccoli da soli troppo tempo, i quali dopo aver effettuato la prima muta lasciano la ragnatela e si separano. Per me è stata una grandissima soddisfazione poter osservare questa scena, sono rimasto ad osservarla e fotografarla per più di un'ora. I piccoli non hanno mai lasciato il nido e la madre non si è spaventata. Intanto il sole era tramontato, mi sono rimesso in cammino verso un posto più nascosto in attesa della notte per continuare l'esplorazione. Qualche giorno dopo il nido era vuoto e la natura aveva fatto il suo corso.
