Il Gange, il fiume sacro dell'India, è adorato dagli Indù, che ritengono che effettuando il bagno nel fiume si possa ottenere il perdono dei peccati e un aiuto per raggiungere la salvezza. Le abluzioni mattutine e serali sono normalmente effettuate presso alcune strutture dedicate costituite da scalinate che terminano nel fiume, dette ghats.
