Usagi è una maiko, una giovane apprendista geisha, anche se già esperta nel suono del tamburo e nella danza del delfino. Nell'immaginario occidentale del Dopoguerra la geisha era considerata una prostituta, in realtà nulla di più lontano dal vero. Essa è una donna elegante e raffinata, che seguendo una tradizione secolare indossa dei kimono con fogge fantastiche, ha un'acconciatura assai elaborata e si dipinge tutto il volto di bianco escludendo una parte del collo, ed eccelle in diverse arti, tra le quali la conversazione, la musica, il canto, la danza, la calligrafia. Ho voluto apposta ritrarre uno dei simboli più alti della femminilità giapponese, una vera opera d'arte vivente, ammirata e adorata da tutti, insieme alla statua fallica anch'essa bianca e sinuosa e insieme alla donna transessuale Rosa dolce e duplice, mettendo in scena una straniante ambiguità.
