La costruzione della Mole iniziò nel 1863. L'edificio fu inizialmente concepito come un tempio della Comunità Israelita Torinese. Nel corso degli anni il progetto originale subì molte modifiche e passò dai 47 metri originari agli attuali 167,5 metri con la conseguente aggiunta della guglia. A seguito di un terremoto nel 1887 si rese necessario un rinforzo strutturale per consentire al terreno di reggere l'enorme peso dell'edificio. A causa dei costi troppo elevati, sebbene ancora in fase di costruzione, l'edificio divenne proprietà del Comune che ne ultimò i lavori nel 1900. Nel 1904 il “genio alato” posizionato sulla punta della mole fu colpito da un fulmine e successivamente rimpiazzato dall'attuale stella a 5 punte. I lavori di consolidamento in cemento armato negli anni '30 furono la causa dell'eliminazione delle splendide decorazioni interni. Nel 1953 un violento uragano fece precipitare al suolo la guglia di 47 metri che nel 1961 fu ricostruita con una struttura interna metallica. Molti si chiedono ancora oggi perché l'architetto Antonelli si fosse impegnato in un'impresa così difficile, con soluzioni architettoniche tanto ardite. Semplice follia e megalomania secondo alcuni.
