La strada romana delle Gallie, costruita per collegare Roma alla Valle del Rodano, ha nel tratto di Donnas uno dei suoi punti più caratteristici e spettacolari, intagliata com'è nella viva roccia per una lunghezza di 221 metri. In un luogo dove, in antico, il promontorio roccioso arrivava a tuffarsi nelle acque della Dora, i Romani hanno lanciato una vera e propria sfida alla natura intagliando una roccia viva su cui hanno saputo tirare pareti perfettamente verticali e nel cui grembo hanno ricavato il sedime stradale. Emozionante ed insolita, qui la Via delle Gallie dà il meglio di sé offrendo lo spettacolo di un passaggio ad arco di 4 metri di spessore, 4 metri di altezza e quasi 3 metri di larghezza che illustra eloquentemente la mole di roccia asportata, mostrando tutta la raffinatezza di una tecnica stradale mai più raggiunta fino ai viadotti e alle gallerie moderne. Nel Medioevo servì come porta del Borgo, che veniva chiusa durante la notte; le altre difese erano naturali: da una parte la montagna e dall'altra il fiume. Una strada fondamentale, molto utilizzata nel corso dei secoli come, effettivamente, testimoniano i profondi segni lasciati dal passaggio dei carri e l'usura del piano di calpestio che, in più punti, presenta rattoppi e risarciture operate nel tempo.
