La Oldsmobile 88 fu prodotta in 11 differenti Serie tra il 1949 ed il 1999. Era disponibile nelle versioni Berlina a 2 e a 4 porte, Coupé, Familiare, Cabriolet e pure Hard Top ma dal 1950... mentre nel 1955 codesta nella versione a 4 porte non ebbe più i montanti laterali. La 1° Serie... il cui primo modello era denominato Rocket 88... fu costruita dal 1949 al 1953 e nel 1952 assunse la denominazione di De Luxe. Nel 1951 vennero introdotti i modelli 88 nelle versioni normale e Super. Questa visibile nella fotografia è una Super 88 appartenente alla II° Serie prodotta nel triennio 1954-56 ed è dotata di un motore V8 di 5300 cm3 erogante 180 cavalli di potenza (dal 1956 la potenza salì a 240 cavalli) mentre nella I° Serie il propulsore era di 5000 cm3 ed erogava 160 cavalli. Si poteva avere con il cambio manuale a due rapporti più la retromarcia oppure con un cambio automatico a tre velocità. Nel 1950 al cambio manuale venne aggiunta una terza marcia in avanti. Queste vetture modello 88 risultarono vittoriose in moltissime competizioni fra cui si può citare il 1° posto nella prestigiosa Carrera Panamericana del 1950... conosciuta anche come Carrera Mexico. Si noti il missile stilizzato sul cofano posteriore inglobato alla sigla 88. Spesso... all'epoca della costruzione di simili vetture... negli Stati Uniti... venivano posti degli abbellimenti di tipo aeronautico e o missilistico per omaggiare l'aviazione e la nascente corsa allo spazio.

Poi... essendo oramai datato... se rimanesse in panne non si trova più il motore per la sostituzione. A mio avviso... se non vuoi spendere troppo potresti orientarti sul mercato dell'usato e cercare un AF 80-200 f 2,8 D bighiera (che è la 3° serie di questo zoom le cui prime due serie sono a pompa mentre lo schema ottico è sempre lo stesso)... che posseggo e che è ottimo... oppure su un AF-S 70-200 f 2,8 VR II... che si trova spendendo un po' di più e pure lui molto valido. Riguardo agli obiettivi AF "D" (prodotti dal 1993-94 in avanti)... sono dei normalissimi obiettivi AF (prodotti dal 1986) a cui... rispetto alla 1° serie denominata solo AF.. venne aggiunto un software interno per dialogare con i nuovi flash della Nikon dove la "D" sta per "Distance" e che nulla ha a che fare con la qualità ottica che era rimasta invariata.
